Virginia's Insurance Marketplace will work with you to explore you and your child’s coverage options to determine which programs you qualify for, as well as how to apply and enroll.
The Marketplace application process will evaluate households for Medicaid eligibility. Individuals can also apply directly for Medicaid, by visiting commonhelp.virginia.gov. If an individual is found ineligible for Medicaid for FAMIS, their application will be transferred back to the Marketplace. The Marketplace will then provide the household with an eligibility determination notice with eligibility results and next steps.
For example, you may be able to enroll in coverage through Virginia's Insurance Marketplace with financial assistance to help lower the cost of coverage, while your child might qualify for Medicaid or the Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan (FAMIS). If that’s the case, you will be able to apply and enroll in coverage through Virginia's Insurance Marketplace, while your child would be connected to free or low-cost coverage through Medical Assistance or FAMIS.
Virginia residents who are lawfully present in the United States may qualify for Medicaid. Individuals interested in healthcare coverage should apply online through commonhelp.virginia.gov. If the individual is determined ineligible for Medicaid, their information will be transferred to Virginia's Insurance Marketplace or to FAMIS, which covers uninsured children under 19.
No matter how you apply, we are committed to ensuring your application gets to the right place so you can enroll in the health coverage that meets the needs of you and your family.
