When you complete an application for coverage through Virginia's Insurance Marketplace, you will be asked several questions about your disability status. Please answer these questions accurately to help ensure that you are enrolled in the appropriate coverage.
For purposes of your Virginia's Insurance Marketplace application, you may be considered an individual with a disability if one or more of the following apply:
- You are blind, deaf, or hard of hearing.
- You receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- You have a physical, cognitive, intellectual, or mental health condition that causes one or more of the following:
- Difficulty completing errands, such as visiting a doctor's office or shopping.
- Serious difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
- Difficulty walking or climbing stairs.
Disabilities in Children
For children, the following conditions may be considered disabilities:
- Having a limited ability to do the things that most children of the same age can do.
- Requiring or using more healthcare services than is typical for most children of the same age.
- Receiving special education services or services under a Section 504 plan.
If you indicate on your Virginia's Insurance Marketplace application that you have a disability, Virginia's Insurance Marketplace will send your application to the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) to determine whether you are eligible for Medicaid based on your disability.
If you do not qualify for Medicaid based on your disability, you may still be eligible based on your income.
If the Commonwealth of Virginia determines that you do not have a qualifying disability and you do not qualify for Medicaid based on your income, you can still purchase health coverage through Virginia's Insurance Marketplace and may qualify for financial assistance.
Important: Health plans cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of a disability or pre-existing condition.
